Trading journal for Interactive Brokers

TradingDiary Pro imports your Interactive Brokers trades, cash transactions and net asset value automatically through IBKR Flex queries – either with one click via the Flex web service or from downloaded Flex XML statements. It builds positions, groups option legs into strategies and turns your IBKR history into journal, performance, risk, net asset value and tax reports. Your data is stored locally on your PC, and the license is a $149 one-time purchase.

How the IBKR import works

  1. Create two Activity Flex queries in IBKR Account Management (Reports > Flex Queries): one for the last 30 days and one for the last 365 days. Interactive Brokers has no date filter in its API, so TradingDiary Pro picks the right query automatically.
  2. Enable the Flex web service and generate a token in Account Management.
  3. Enter the query IDs and the token in TradingDiary Pro (Import > Select Import Module > Settings).
  4. Click Import. The first import downloads the last year; later imports fetch only new activity. Positions, option strategies and reports update immediately.

Step-by-step instructions with screenshots are in the online help: creating the Flex queries and setting up the web service import.

Importing more than one year of history

Run the Flex query in Account Management for earlier periods, save the XML files, then switch to the Interactive Brokers Flex (file) module and load them one by one. Let the date ranges overlap by at least one day so no trades are missed. Very active traders can split a large year into quarterly files. Details: Interactive Brokers import issues and fixes.

Options traders on IBKR

Interactive Brokers reports every option leg as a separate execution. TradingDiary Pro groups them back into the strategy you actually traded, shows one combined PnL per strategy, and lets you break up a spread, assign legs manually or record adjustments and rolls. Read more in the options trading journal guide.

Account migrations and multiple currencies

If IBKR moves your account to a new entity (for example after Brexit for EEA clients), follow the account migration guide. Trades in non-base currencies are handled with historical exchange rates; for tax reports the desktop version can download official central bank rates.

Also in the browser and with AI

The web version (beta) already supports Interactive Brokers Flex XML import with option strategy recognition. And with the built-in MCP server you can ask Claude questions such as “What was my realized PnL on IBKR options this year?” – answered from your own data.

Frequently asked questions

Does TradingDiary Pro import Interactive Brokers automatically?

Yes. With the Interactive Brokers Flex (web service) import module, TradingDiary Pro downloads your Flex statements using your token and query IDs. After the first import only new activity is fetched. Alternatively you can import Flex XML files you saved from Account Management.

Which Interactive Brokers statement formats are supported?

XML statements created by Activity Flex Queries, either downloaded automatically through the Flex web service or loaded from a saved file.

Does it group IBKR option legs into spreads?

Yes. Option legs are grouped automatically into more than 25 strategy types with a combined profit and loss. You can also assign legs manually, break up a spread, and record adjustments and rolls.

Are dividends, interest and fees imported too?

Yes. Cash transactions – dividends, interest, fees, withholding tax, deposits and withdrawals – are imported with the trades, together with current and historical net asset value.

Can I track several IBKR accounts or a CapTrader account?

Yes. You can import several Interactive Brokers accounts into one journal or keep them in separate databases. CapTrader accounts are imported with the same Interactive Brokers import module.

How do I import more than one year of IBKR history?

Run your Flex query for earlier periods in Account Management, save the XML files and load them with the Interactive Brokers Flex (file) module. Make the date ranges overlap by at least one day so no trades are missed.
